The Hidden Sense: Synesthesia in Art and Science (Leonardo Books)

vancampen.jpg

Excerpt from MIT press's  press release
What is synesthesia? It is not, van Campen concludes, an audiovisual performance, a literary technique, an artistic trend, or a metaphor. It is, perhaps, our hidden sense--a way to think visually; a key to our own sensitivity.

About the Author
Cretien van Campen is a social scientist at the Social and Cultural Planning Office of the Netherlands. He is the author of two books on perception and visual art.

WELCOME to the Australian Synesthesia website.

This website is devoted to promoting Australian related activities on Synesthesia. (We are also building up some New Zealand information as well.)

We have pages on types of synesthesia, activites in Australia / NZ and links to other really great synesthesia sites.

We hope to make it a portal for the exchange of information, and perhaps even a place to stimulate ideas.  We hope to establish a Synesthesia Association for Australia and New Zealand, so if youre interested in helping or finding out more please contact me.

If you are a synesthete please visit the contacts page and leave us your email so we can keep you up to date with the latest events and information about synesthesia. You can also tell us if you would like to help us out by participating in important research projects.

Sydney Universities Color Form and Motion Lab has research projects running currently, investigating color letters and words as well as sound to color and shape Synesthesia.  If you are interested in participating in research on synesthesia we have ethics approved non invasive experiments running currently and are always happy to hear from synesthetes interested in participating. Email us to find out more.

A great way to find out more about synesthesia is to talk with some other synesthetes. If that appeals to you then register for more information. we hope to have some events for synesthetes, their families and friends in Australia, probably starting in NSW.

You can also use this site to start your research on the web. We have a links page that will take you to sites from internationally renowned researchers in the field, as well as prominant synesthete artists, musicians as well as students and others. We recommend joining Sean Day's email list as well. Its a great way to see how other synesthetes experience the world. See the links page for that.

Another great way is to go to one of the annual international conferences. These conferences usually combine researchers and synesthetes. These are held in the USA, the UK and in Spain.

*     I attended this conference – there were many terrific papers presented but the most interesting was that there was a mix of researchers and synesthetes and artists. Quite a combination. A link to the abstracts of papers presented is here. If you have a specific question about a paper in mind, please email me and I will do my best to send you the notes or my comments on the findings.
